CHARLESTON, S.C. – With just four games remaining in the regular season, the College of Charleston men's soccer team (3-6-3; 1-2-2 vs. CAA) will play a critical conference match on Saturday night when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to face William & Mary (7-6-2; 1-3-2 vs. CAA) at 7 p.m.
The College comes fresh off a big upset, having tied No. 3 North Carolina 0-0 at Patriots Point. Kevin Shields put on a masterful performance in front of the home-crowd, standing tall in big moments and finishing the evening with a 10-save shutout. It was the third time this season the Cougars had tied a team receiving attention in the NSCAA Coaches Poll.
At five points on the season by way of a win and two ties, the Cougars will need every point they can get in the final three CAA contests, and that starts against the Tribe on Saturday. As things currently stand, the Cougars and Tribe are locked in a three-way-tie with JMU for sixth place. A win over William & Mary could propel CofC all the way to a fourth-place tie with UNCW.
The Tribe have lost three of their previous four contests, with their lone-win coming at home against Michigan, 4-0. The last time the two teams played, CofC came away with the 3-1 win thanks to goals from Hamilton Carlin, Nico Rittmeyer, and Adan Noel. Shields had seven saves in that contest.
William & Mary has a pair of seven-goal scorers in Antonio Bustamante and Ryder Bell. Phil Breno tends goal for the Tribe, sporting a 1.19 GAA and 0.731 save percentage.
