Cougars’ Comeback-Bid Falls Short in 3-2 Loss to W&M
10/22/2016 9:11:00 PM | Men's Soccer
WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team fell to 3-7-3 overall and 1-3-2 against CAA competition Saturday, succumbing to the William & Mary Tribe (8-6-2; 2-3-2 vs. CAA) by a score of 3-1.
• William & Mary controlled the pace in the first half and held the advantage in the shot battle 9-2. Yet Kevin Shields stood strong, making five saves to keep the game scoreless going into half time.
• Shields suffered an apparent upper-body injury in the first frame, causing head coach Ralph Lundy to make a halftime change at keeper and hand the defensive keys to redshirt sophomore Treston Kederer. In an unfortunate turn of events, William & Mary got the ball first in the second half, marched down the field, and scored off the foot of William Eskay just 25 seconds into the period.
• As the Cougars made the offensive shift in the final 30 minutes to try and equalize the game, William & Mary capitalized with two goals in 24 seconds, as Ryder Bell and Reilly Maw both scored in the 64th minute to make it 3-0.
• The Cougars responded in the 68th minute to prevent the shutout when Paul Burdick sent in a great cross from the corner to a waiting Nico Rittmeyer, who headed in his third goal of the year. Ten minutes later, the Tribe committed a foul in the box, leading to a PK goal for Leland Archer (78').
The Cougars will stay on the road for their final non-conference contest of the season when they travel to Atlanta for a 7 p.m. showdown on Wednesday against the Georgia State Panthers (9-6).
