Women’s Hoops Heads for Matchup with Mountaineers
11/26/2016 1:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. - With just two games left on the docket for November, the College of Charleston women's basketball team (1-3) will look to end the month on a high note as they head to Boone for a 2 p.m. Sunday showdown with the Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-2).
The Cougars come off a 71-61 loss to Virginia Tech (5-0) in TD Arena. The Hokies established a big early lead in the opening quarters, but the College slowly began to chip in. Things came to a head at the beginning of the fourth quarter, when three straight CofC baskets capped off by a Darien Huff three brought the College to within one and forced a VT timeout. But that's as close as the Cougars would come, as Virginia Tech regained it's composure and rode late fouling to the win. Breanna Bolden had a 16-10 double-double, while Tanisha Brown led the team in scoring with 17 points.
The Cougars and Mountaineers have a lengthy rivalry from their SoCON days, and Sunday will mark the 41st game in the series which dates back to the 1974-75 season. Appalachian State controls the 23-17 advantage in the series, thanks in large part to a 10-game undefeated streak against the College between 2010 and 2013. However, the Cougars got back to their winning ways last season, snapping the streak with a 60-50 win in TD Arena. Huff had a career-high 16 in that game, while Bolden had a 12-8 outing, adding six steals.
The Mountaineers are 3-2 on the year, with their most recent game turning out to be a 71-68 thriller against East Tennessee State which featured a three-point buzzer-beater to seal the App. State win. All five of their games have been on the road so far, making the clash with the Cougars their home-opener. The Mountaineers haven't had anybody dominate the load for them in either rebounds or assists, but in the scoring department, they are led by Joi Jones who averages 15.6 PPG and shoots 50% from long-range. Appalachian State is looking to improve upon their 10-20 record posted last season.
Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday in the George M. Holmes Convocation Center.
