CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (2-7) returns to TD Arena for its final non-conference home game of the season Tuesday, where the Cougars will try and end its four-game skid against the visiting Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (4-5) at 4 p.m.
The Cougars come off a tough road stretch against No. 8/8 Louisville and Western Kentucky. After a tough outing against the Cardinals, the Cougars bounced back with gusto against WKU, giving the Lady Toppers all they could handle. In a game that featured 11 lead changes, the latest of which coming early in the fourth quarter, the College submitted its second-highest point total of the season at 76.
After a back and forth opening quarter, WKU took control in the second to go into the locker room up 11. The Cougars rallied in the third however, outscoring the Lady Toppers 27-18 in the period to reduce the gap to two. Western Kentucky turned up the heat late however, upping the tempo and swarming the ball before the eventual medley of free throws gave them the 89-76 win. Breanna Bolden scored a game-high and season-high 23 points, adding five steals in defeat. At 3.8 steals per game on the season, Bolden ranks sixth in the nation.
The Cougars and Chanticleers have played 46 times previously in a series that dates back to 1974. The College controls the commanding 34-12 advantage, and have won the last two meetings. The last time the two teams played was in 2013-14 at Myrtle Beach. Christy Hewatt (14-9) and Afreyea Tolbert (16-9) both flirted with double-doubles in that game, helping to lead the Cougars to a 80-62 win. Bolden is the only player remaining on the CofC roster who saw action in that game, posting a 5-3-3 with two steals.
Coastal Carolina is following up a 12-18 season last year, and currently sits at 4-5 in 2016-17 after having beaten the likes of N.C. Central, Fort Wayne, Pfeiffer and S.C. State. They are led by Rachael Gregory's 15.2 PPG, while her and Alexis Robinson do the lion's share of work on the glass with 8.0 rebounds per game a piece. Ced Gibson (11.4 PPG, 2.1 SPG, 3.4 APG) and Kennedy Archer (11.3 PPG, 2.7 SPG) also figure in significantly to the Chanticleer game plan.
Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tickets are still available by visiting CofCSports.com/Tickets, or by calling (843) 953-COFC.
