NEWARK, DEL. – Junior forward Breanna Bolden set a pair of historical milestones on both the offensive and defensive end Friday night in the Bob Carpenter Center, but a late surge from the Blue Hens spoiled the occasion as the CofC women's basketball team fell 72-55.
Before the contest was even half-over, Bolden recorded both her 1000th point and 200th steal against Delaware, making her only the second player in the CofC Division I era to accomplish the feat. The native of Edgewater, Md. finished with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals on the night.
Bolden's feat makes her the 26th in program history and 12th since the College joined Division I to join the 1000 Point Club. Meanwhile, at 202 career-steals, Bolden ties Tonia Gerty (2007-11) for third place in CofC Division I Era History.
“It's been fun to watch in the last year and a half as she's developed into the player she is, because she does it with flair and she does it with style,” head coach Candice M. Jackson said. “She really sets the tone in the way that we want to play. I hear from so many of the little girls who come to watch us that they want to play with number 24, and that speaks a lot to the work she puts in.”
As for the game itself, the Cougars benefited from a very slow start from Delaware, who missed their first seven field goal attempts of the contest. As things settled down, both teams found balanced scoring from their rosters, and at the end of the half, the game was extremely tight with Delaware leading 34-33.
As with their last game against Delaware earlier this season, the Cougars' woes revealed themselves during the second half. The Blue Hens went on a few big runs, including 11-0 spree to kick off the half, and outscored CofC 38-22 in the final 20 minutes.
“Delaware outworked us in the second half,” Jackson said. “We lost a lot of loose balls in hustle-plays, and the veteran team showed why they were the veteran team.”
Beyond Bolden, Kelsey Booth and Dajah Logan had useful games for the Cougars, with the senior grabbing seven rebounds to go with her eight points, and the freshman drilling three triples during the first half, two of which came back-to-back.
The Cougars performed admirably from the free-throw line, knocking down 12 of their 14 attempts. Unfortunately, Delaware prevailed in most other meaningful categories, including rebounds, assists, turnovers, blocks and field goal shooting.
Both the Blue Hens and Cougars stand pat in the standings at fifth and sixth respectively as a result of the game. The College will remain on the road, where they will face Towson on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
