TOWSON, MD. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-14; 4-9 vs. CAA) dropped the second game of their two-game road-trip after their comeback gambit fell short Sunday, as the Tigers (6-18; 3-10 vs. CAA) pulled away for the 62-51 win.
Reminiscent of their first meeting of the season in TD Arena, the Cougars scored the first eight points of the game. Towson would recover however, tying the game at 16-16 after the first, and carrying 32-25 and 46-35 leads with them after the second and third respectively.
The beginning of the fourth quarter looked extremely promising when Breanna Bolden turned up the heat, getting two layups off of two steals less than 40 seconds apart. After sustaining the momentum, a Nola Henry three capped off the 13-5 run to start the quarter, bringing the College within three points as the score became 51-48 with less than five to play. Unfortunately, that's where the scoring would stop for the Cougars, as they'd finish with just three more points in the rest of the game to Towson's 11.
Despite being hampered by early foul trouble, Bolden finished with five steals on the night to move into sole possession of third place on the CofC Division I Era career-steals list (207). She also added nine points, eight rebounds and four assists. Kelsey Booth was the lone-Cougar to reach double-digit scoring with 11 points, while Nola Henry had a decent outing with eight points, four assists and three steals.
Though the College hung tight in a variety of key-categories such as rebounding, assists, turnovers and steals, the Tigers ultimately won the day by out-performing the Cougars in shooting the ball, particularly from three point range, where Towson went 7-of-13 compared to CofC's 4-of-21 afternoon. The Tigers also managed to force their way to the line a great deal more, earning 16 trips to the line, 11 more than the Cougars' five.
On an individual level, Dominique Johnson led the Tigers with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while freshman Brittany Tarr performed well, nearly earning the double-double with a ten-point, eight-rebound, three-block stat-line.
With the win, Towson advanced from tenth to ninth place over UNCW with a 3-10 conference record. The Cougars meanwhile slip from sixth to seventh place by virtue of Northeastern's victory over Elon on Sunday.
The Cougars will return home where they will get their own crack at Elon, as they will host the Phoenix on Friday for the annual SPEC Education Game at 11:30 a.m.
