Cougars Triumph Over Florida Atlantic, 4-3

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team defeated Florida Atlantic, 4-3, in a nail-biter that came down to the wire on Sunday.
The Cougars (7-3) entered the match coming off another hard-fought win against Appalachian State on Feb. 28, and had their hands full on the road against a talented Florida Atlantic team (6-6).
The doubles competition proved to be crucial towards the final score, as the two doubles wins gave The College a deciding point against the Owls. Zack Lewis and Charlie Ghriskey won the No. 2 doubles flight, 6-4, and Rodrigo Encinas and Juan Estevarena won in the No. 1 flight for the eighth time this season, this time by a score of 6-4.
Charleston and Florida Atlantic split the singles matches three games to three. Rodrigo Encinas took the No. 3 singles point in a fierce three sets match that ended, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Juan Estevarena continued his stellar season with another No. 1 singles victory; he has won in that spot seven times over nine matches. Garrett Gordon also came through for the Cougars with a crucial win, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles match.
After the close competition, Charleston will take a few days to practice and prepare for next weekend, when they have three matches over three days at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point. CofC faces Boston on Friday, March 11; Old Dominion on Saturday, March 12; and Colonial Athletic Association rival James Madison on Sunday, March 13.
