CHARLESTON, S.C. – After rain forced a change in venue, the No. 2 seeded College of Charleston men's tennis team took down No. 7 James Madison, 4-1, in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Friday.
The Cougars (17-6) will face No. 3 seed, and tournament host, Elon in the semi-final round on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Elon's Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Zack Lewis got the first point for The College with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Tristan Stitt, but JMU drew even at 1-1 when Maxi Branth beat Charlie Ghriskey, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 3 spot. Rodrigo Encinas rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Brett Moorhead at No. 2 and Juan Esteverena outlasted Sebastian Salinas, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the No. 1 singles flight. The match came to a close at the No. 6 position when Garrett Gordon defeated James Madison's Alex Berdnikoff, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). With the win, Charleston has now reached the semi-finals in each of its three season as a member of the CAA.
In the next round, Charleston will find themselves against another opponent that it saw in the regular season, as they are slated to take on Elon. The College defeated the Pheonix back on April 6 by a hard-fought score of 4-3. Elon won its first round match against No. 6 seeded Hoftsra, 4-0.
