Men’s Tennis Splits Matches on Saturday
2/11/2017 6:35:00 PM | Men's Tennis
TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (4-1) split its two matches in Tallahassee on Saturday, defeating Florida A&M (2-7) 6-1 before falling to Florida State (7-2) 4-0.
For the first time all season, the Cougars failed to capture the doubles point in their matchup with the Rattlers, but they responded emphatically in singles play with a 6-0 sweep. Benedikt Henning had the smoothest win of the day in flight two, knocking of Karlyn Small 6-0, 6-2. Juan Estevarena, Fernando Lascurian and Jake Kusmider all scored two-set victories to seal the win for the College.
Vasily Kichigin and Ryan Khan grabbed wins as well, but it took them three sets to do it. Kichigin won the first set against Walner Espinoza in flight three, but after losing the second set, was forced into executing the 6-4 win in set three to take the match. Khan meanwhile won a tiebreak 7-6(3) in the fourth flight, and later had to win a super tiebreak 10-3 to pull off the win against Nani Lizana.
Florida State proved to be too tall an order for the Cougars, as the Seminoles quickly won two doubles matches followed by decisive wins in flight two, three and six to win the day. Lascurian and Khan were both making headway in their matches before they were abruptly ended. Lascurian lost a tightly contested first set to Terrell Whitehurst 7-5, while Khan was leading in the second set 4-2 before time was called.
The Cougars will be back in action next Friday, when they will once again return to Florida to square off with UNF at 6 p.m.
