Cougars Have Date with Dukes in Sunday’s Play4Kay Game

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-16, 6-8) returns to TD Arena to kick off a three-game home-stand this Sunday, when it will host the James Madison Dukes (19-6, 12-2) in the Play4Kay Pink Game at 2 p.m.
The Cougars come off a thrilling overtime win on the road over William & Mary on Friday. Shiclasia Brown came up huge with some enormous baskets, first with an And-One layup to force the overtime, and then later another layup with two second to play to clinch the 71-69 victory. She wasn't the only Brown of significance for the Cougars, as Tanisha Brown provided a career and game-high 24 points, to go along with 12 boards for her ninth double-double of the season.
The game also represented significant milestones for multiple Cougars. Not only did Breanna Bolden pull down the 806th rebound of her career to break the CofC Division I Era Career Rebounds record, but with their sixth win of the season against the CAA, the Cougars surpassed their previous season-high for conference wins in the Candice M. Jackson coaching era.
The Cougars and Dukes will meet for the 8th time on record, with JMU holding the 6-1 edge in the series. The last time they played was in a CAA Quarterfinal thriller where the College got off to a big lead that they maintained for nearly the entire game. Kelsey Booth (22-4) and Jackie Luna-Castro (14-7) submitted excellent senior season swan songs, but the Dukes chipped away, and with just over a minute left in the game, took the lead to pull off the 53-50 comeback win.
James Madison is a wildly different team since last the Cougars saw them, having lost four starters from the program to graduation or otherwise and one starter (Kayla Cooper-Williams) to a season-ending injury. In their place, the Dukes have turned to Preseason Player of the Year Precious Hall and CAA Rookie of the Year contender Kamiah Smalls. Hall is averaging a jaw-dropping 23.6 points per game, while Smalls has averaged 10 points and six rebounds per contest. In addition, the Dukes said goodbye to long-time head coach Kenny Brooks prior to the season, making way for former assistant Sean O'Regan to start a new era in Harrisonburg.
The defending CAA Champs find themselves in good position for another No. 1 seed in the tournament with a pair of wins over fellow front-runner Elon, and they ride a seven-game winning streak into Sunday's action. The only blemishes on their record are a pair of losses to Towson.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was born in December, 2007 and is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women's cancers by raising funds for scientific research, assisting the underserved, and unifying people for a common cause. To date, the Fund has allocated more than $5 million in support of women's cancer research. Coach Yow envisioned the women's basketball community doing its part by funding research at a level that will create significant results – and lead to a cure.
