CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-19, 6-11) takes the floor for the final time of the regular season Wednesday night, as they will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to square off with the James Madison Dukes (21-7, 14-3) at 7 p.m.
Wednesday will play a pivotal role in revealing the Cougars' postseason path, with four of the five CAA games scheduled that day playing a direct role in helping to determine tournament seeding. As things stand, the Cougars are capable of finishing as the No. 9 or 10 seed, and most potential scenarios point to them playing against UNCW. However, it's also possible for the College to play any of Towson, Hofstra or Northeastern depending on how the rest of the games shake out. The conference tournament is being hosted by James Madison this year, and will run from March 8 through 11.
The Cougars come off a tough two-loss weekend to close out their slate of home games. CofC fell 86-75 to Northeastern on Friday before succumbing to Delaware 69-56 on senior day. Breanna Bolden had another great weekend despite the unfavorable results, averaging 25.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and four assists. Not only that, she matched the CofC Division I Era record for free throw percentage by going a perfect 11 of 11 from the stripe against the Blue Hens, and also moved up to No. 4 on the CofC All-Time scoring list.
The College will square off with James Madison for the ninth time on record, with the Dukes controlling the 7-1 edge in the all-time series. The two teams met earlier in the season at TD Arena in a high-scoring affair that saw JMU prevail 84-78. Bolden and Tanisha Brown erupted for a combined 47 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, but strong performances from Precious Hall (25 Pts, 5 Reb, 4 Ast) and Amber Porter (18 Pts, 5 Reb) helped preserve the win for the Dukes.
JMU is the reigning CAA Champion, and have lived up to that billing this year with a 14-3 record against conference opponents. The Dukes were riding a nine-game winning streak prior to last Sunday, when they fell at home to William & Mary. Other than the Tribe, the only other conference member to solve the JMU puzzle was Towson, who did so twice.
Hall is not only the Dukes' top-scorer with 23.2 points per game, she is one of the Top 10 scorers in the nation this season, also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals. Kamiah Smalls has been a breakout star for the Dukes this season as well, having locked down six CAA Rookie of the Week honors this year. Porter rounds things out as one of the Top 5 shot-blockers in the conference, coming off the bench to provide a defensive spark.
