Men’s Tennis Falls 4-0 to Spiders
3/10/2017 4:51:00 PM | Men's Tennis
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (6-4) dropped a tough doubles decision and never quite recovered Friday, falling to the Richmond Spiders (11-2) by a score of 4-0.
After going down 1-0 in doubles play, the Cougars responded on court one when Juan Estevarena and Vasily Kichigin teamed up to knock off the No. 61 ranked tandem of Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa by a score of 6-2. However, with the point on the line, UofR's Jonathan Quenard and John Karlawish were able to execute the come-from-behind win, beating Benedikt Henning and Alec Angradi 7-5 in flight two.
The Spiders kept up the pressure through singles play, and moved things to 2-0 with a flight four win. Juan Estevarena fell next in the first flight, and though it was a close match, Fernando Ramirez Lascurian surrendered the decisive fourth point in flight six, as James Aronson prevailed 7-6(2), 7-5.
The final score was perhaps artificially lopsided, as both Benedikt Henning and Vasily Kichigin were leading their matches before action was called to a halt. Henning had a convincing 7-5, 4-1 lead in flight two, while Kichigin was just starting his third set, up 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 on Caleb Troy in flight three.
The Cougars return to action Saturday, when they host Lynchburg College (0-5) at 5 PM.
