CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (11-5) hosts its final home match of the year on Saturday afternoon, when it will face off against the East Carolina Pirates (14-5) for its Senior Day matchup.
The match was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m., but is being nudged back to 1:30 p.m. for the ensuing logistical challenge to be imposed by the Cooper River Bridge Run.
The Cougars have won their last three straight with victories over The Citadel, DePaul, and Davidson last week. Benedikt Henning picked up CAA Player of the Week honors as the sophomore extended his unbeaten streak to eight and improved his singles record to a conference-best 11-2. He was one of four Cougars to go 3-0 last week, joining Juan Estevarena, Vasily Kichigin and Alec Angradi.
CofC will honor three players on Senior Day. Rodrigo Encinas is the elder statesman of the group, having spent all four years with the College, sporting a 40-16 doubles record during his time in maroon. Franz Sydow has spent three years in the Lowcountry after spending his freshman year at Minnesota, and owns a 11-9 singles record heading into Saturday. Though not a senior officially, Kichigin rounds out the group, and will graduate a year early after posting a 33-24 singles record across three years.
The College played ECU in Greenville last season, and more recently faced off with the Pirates extensively during the Fall season. In their matchup in 2016, the Cougars rebounded from a lost doubles point to take the match 4-2 with wins on courts 1, 3, 4, and 5.
East Carolina is 14-5 on the year, but have lost their last two straight matches against Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. The Pirates have been most effective in sets two through five, where Vlad Anghel, Ronny Georgi, Fredric Lehfeldt and Kasey Countee all have at least 12 wins on the season.
