Henning’s Heroics Send Pirates to Davy Jones’ Locker on Senior Day

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – It took four and a half hours of battling between the College of Charleston men's tennis team (12-5) and East Carolina (14-6) on Saturday afternoon at Patriots Point, but with things gridlocked at 3-3, Benedikt Henning rose to the occasion to deliver the win for the Cougars in their senior day matchup.
Doubles play set the tone for the dog fight to come. Juan Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas were able to persevere 6-4 in flight one in a heated affair with Freddie McGeehen and James Ling. The Pirates responded with a tiebreak win on court two by a score of 7-6(3), and clinched the point with yet another tiebreak win on court three with a 7-6(5) decision.
In singles play, every single flight played to a third set. Alec Angradi succumbed in his war of attrition on court five, retiring with an upper body ailment to allow ECU's Will Bissett to earn the point. The match was 6-4, 4-6, 1-3 when play ceased.
Estevarena put the Cougars on the board despite stumbling in the second flight, dispatching Vlad Anghel 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Vasily Kichigin followed suit, correcting a nightmarish opening set to secure the 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Fredric Lehfeldt to lock the overall match up at 2-2.
Javier Renones put the Pirates back out front, outlasting Luke Kusmider in the sixth flight 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. However, Encinas stepped up to the occasion for Senior Day, defeating Kasey Countee 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-5 to knot the match up at 3-3.
That left the fate of the match to court two, where the reigning CAA Player of the Week Benedikt Henning was putting his eight-match unbeaten streak on the line against ECU's Ronny Georgi. Henning had won the opening set 6-4, and was poised to win the second until Georgi came back to force a tiebreak and win 7-6(4). In the third, Georgi got out to the 1-0 lead, and the two alternated points until things got to 5-5. With both men exhausted, Henning managed to squeeze out the win, taking three consecutive games to rise 7-5 and give the Cougars the win. At 12-2 in singles play this year, Henning currently has the best record in the CAA.
With their final home match of the season in the books, the Cougars now hit the road for their final four matches of the regular season. Their next match will be in Harrisonburg Va. on April 7 against James Madison.
