Cougars Seek Third Straight First Round Win Over JMU

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (13-7) will look to defend its 2016 CAA Title at this weekend's CAA Tournament, beginning with a first round matchup with the James Madison Dukes (14-8) on Friday at 9 a.m.
The Cougars enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed, pitting them against the No. 5 seeded Dukes. The match will take place at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C.
CofC won five of its final seven matches of the season, but dropped their most recent two encounters against Old Dominion and Charlotte by narrow margins. The Cougars have been most potent in singles play at the top of their depth chart, where Juan Estevarena and Benedikt Henning are a combined 28-7 on the year in flights one and two. Estevarena is also the team's ace in doubles play, and sports a 9-3 record on the season in top flight action.
The Cougars and Dukes were supposed to meet earlier this month at JMU's Hillside Courts, but foul weather ruined the occasion.
As fate would have it, the last time the two teams met was a year ago in the first round of the 2016 tournament, that time in the 2/7 matchup. The two teams skipped doubles play, leading to a 4-1 CofC victory by way of wins in flights 1, 2, 4 and 6. Estevarena and Rodrigo Encinas are the two returning players for the College who picked up wins in that match, doing so in flights one and two.
In fact, this is the third straight year that the Cougars and Dukes have met in the opening round of the tournament. JMU has yet to record a victory over CofC since the College entered the CAA prior to the 2014 season.
The Dukes enter the tournament riding a three-match win-streak, with victories over Villanova, Drexel and Bridgewater to close out the year. Tate Steinour has the team's best singles record from the No. 6 position at 15-4, while Paul Mendoza carries an 11-5 top flight doubles record as well as a 14-5 singles records spread all through the four middle flights.
