CHARLESTON, S.C. --- With the home portion of its 2018 schedule in the rear view, the College of Charleston volleyball team travels north to New York and Massachusetts this weekend for a pair of crucial tests in the leadup to the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association Championship. The Cougars will square off with second-place Hofstra at 7:00 pm on Thursday evening in Hempstead, N.Y., before facing fourth-place Northeastern at 7:00 pm on Saturday in Boston, Mass.
Series History
Thursday's match marks the 16th all-time meeting between CofC and Hofstra. The Cougars lead the all-time series, 9-6, following a 3-1 setback to the Pride on Oct. 5. Charleston and Northeastern will meet for the 13th time on Saturday, with the Cougars leading the all-time series, 8-4, after falling to the Huskies in straight sets on Oct. 7.
Scouting Hofstra
Hofstra comes into the weekend with a 19-7 overall record and sits second in the CAA standings with a 9-3 mark in conference play. The Pride lead the league with a .158 opponent hitting percentage in CAA action, and rank second in hitting percentage (.246), kills (13.78), assists (12.64), and service aces (1.62). Michela Rucli (.419) and Doris Bogoje (.380) occupy the top two spots in the CAA in hitting percentage during league play, while Ivania Ortiz leads the conference in service aces (0.45).
Scouting Northeastern
The Huskies carry a 14-11 overall record into the weekend, and sit fourth in the CAA standings with a 7-5 mark in conference action. Northeastern ranks fifth in league play in opponent hitting percentage (.205) and service aces (1.23). Gabrielle Eyl paces the CAA in digs per set (5.45) during conference action, while Natalie Sholin ranks eighth in hitting percentage (.305).
Slamming It Down
The Cougars' offense exploded for a season-high 71 kills and a .378 hitting percentage in a 3-1 win over Delaware on Sunday to break into the nation's top 10 in both total kills and total assists. Three Cougars finished with at least 16 kills, as CofC posted the second-highest four-set kill total in its rally-scoring history, and the most kills in a match since Sept. 17, 2016 against Virginia.
History Maker
Allison Beckman continues to solidify her standing as one of the best setters in program - and CAA- history, and with a four-set career-high 59 assists on Sunday, became only the second player at CofC to record four straight 1,000-assists seasons. The 2017 CAA Setter of the Year currently ranks second all-time at The College, and first in the rally-scoring era with 4,545 career assists.
Closing In
Senior Kennedy Madison is closing in on some elite company in the program's history, needing 44 kills to move into a tie for 10th on the all-time kills list. The 6-foot right side also needs 28 blocks to crack the program's top 10 in blocks.
