
NIVC Preview: Charleston Opens NIVC Play Against the Red Storm Thursday

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team (21-11) will continue its quest for postseason hardware on Thursday afternoon with a 4:00 pm matchup against the St. John's (N.Y.) Red Storm in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga.
Championship Preview
The Cougars enter the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship as the No. 2 seed in the Georgia Tech regional, and are one of the highest-rated teams in the field based on RPI at No. 63.
Series History
Thursday's first round match-up marks the first all-time meeting between the Cougars and Red Storm. The Cougars own a 2-1 all-time record against the Big East, including a 1-1 mark against Georgetown and a win over Xavier.
Scouting St. John's
The Red Storm enter the NIVC after advancing to the Big East Semifinals as the No. 3 seed, where they fell to Marquette in four sets. St. John's carries a 23-11 overall record, including a 12-6 mark in Big East play.
St. John's ranks among the national top 10 in assists (5th/1,657), kills (7th/1,742), service aces (8th/199), and total attacks (9th/4,725). Amanda Sanabia paces the Big East and ranks sixth in the nation in digs (689), while Erica Di Maulo ranks seventh in the nation in assists (1,346).
Best in Show
The Cougars claimed the CAA's Player of the Year award in back-to-back seasons for the first time in the program's Division I era on Nov. 15, with Devon Rachel earning the honor after averaging 4.34 kills and 2.88 digs per set in conference play. The senior outside hitter posted 3.85 kills and 2.80 digs per set during the regular season while attacking at a .262 clip.
Hauling in the Hardware
A trio of Cougars picked up postseason awards from the CAA this season, with Devon Rachel and Kennedy Madison each earning All-CAA First Team honors for the first time in their careers. Senior setter Allison Beckman was named to the All-CAA Second Team - her fourth straight All-CAA nod.
Getting Noticed
Lauren Freed collected her second career CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 12 after pacing the Cougars to a pair of road sweeps over William & Mary and Elon. The junior outside hitter averaged 4.33 kills and 2.33 digs per set while compiling a .393 hitting percentage over the weekend.
History Maker
Allison Beckman continues to solidify her standing as one of the best setters in program - and CAA- history, currently ranking topping both the school's and conference's career assists list during the rally-scoring era. The 2017 CAA Setter of the Year ranks second all-time at The College, and third all-time in the CAA with 4,821 assists as a Cougar.
Climbing the Ladder
Senior Kennedy Madison continued her climb through the program's all-time ranks on the regular season's final weekend, moving into 10th on the career kills list and now stands at 1,356 smashes in the Maroon and White. The Evansville, Ind. native is in the midst of a career season, averaging 3.47 kills per set and posting a .318 hitting percentage. Both marks are good for fifth in the CAA.
Chasing History
Head coach Jason Kepner is in his 12th year at the helm, and already ranks as the longest tenured coach in program history. Kepner's 285 career wins ranks second on the school's all-time list, trailing only Nancy Wilson's (1974-83) total of 286 victories.
