Cougars Face CCU, Samford for Back-to-Back Matches
3/13/2018 9:44:00 PM | Women's Tennis
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team (9-5) will play two back to back matches this week against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (7-5) and the Samford Bulldogs (6-6).
The Cougars will journey up to Conway to take on CCU on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. before returning home to host Samford on Thursday at 2 p.m.
CofC will look to bounce back from a two-match skid, having dropped to Campbell and Winthrop last week. Prior to that, the College had peeled off a pair of 7-0 victories at home to Savannah State and Providence, making for a 2-2 home-stand. In their most recent match against the Eagles, Rachel McNeely was the lone player to score a singles win, defeating Megan Kauffman 7-6(5), 6-0 on court three. On the season, McNeely is 7-6 in singles and 6-4 in doubles.
Since joining NCAA Division I, the College has had a dominant record against both of their upcoming opponents, boasting a 15-2 record against CCU and an 11-1 clip against Samford. The Cougars have won four straight against Coastal Carolina with their last defeat coming in 2006, while the Cougars have ripped off 11 straight against the Bulldogs, with their only defeat occurring in 1992.
The Chanticleers are a solid 7-5 on the season, but have dropped two of their last three with losses to No. 11 USC and Davidson. Among teams both the Cougars and Chants have faced this season, CCU lost to Campbell (4-3), defeated NC A&T (7-0), and defeated St. John's (5-2). Sara Bondar has the team's best singles record at 8-3 on the year, doing her damage primarily in fourth flight action.
Samford's season has been all about streaks so far this year, as the Bulldogs started a three-match win-streak, followed by a six-match skid, and most recently, another three-match win-streak with victories over Eastern Kentucky, UT Martin and Murray State. It will not be the first time Samford has ventured to the Lowcountry this year, as the team took part in the CofC Classic back in the Fall campaign. Holly Horsfall has held things down in third flight singles for the team this year, and boasts a 7-3 overall record.
Admission to all College of Charleston home tennis matches is free of charge.
