MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (5-7) had a strong comeback in the making against Appalachian State (9-6) on Friday, but couldn't get over the last hump, falling 4-3 in a match that lasted over three hours.
Â
The Cougars radically shuffled up their doubles lineups with mixed results. Alec Angradi and Benedikt Henning won 6-4 on court three, which leveled things up with a loss in flight one. That left Youssef Dabbabi and Juan Estevarena to battle things out in flight two against Ben Webster and Alex Pavkovich. The Cougars trailed it 6-5, but overcame three match points to win the game and force a tiebreak. However, they ran out of steam in the extended play, and App State emerged with the point.
Â
The College responded well with quick back-to-back wins in lower flight play, where Easton Thomas (6-0, 6-2) and Fernando Ramirez Lascurian (6-2, 6-0) clobbered their opponents in 14 games each. The Mountaineers fired back with a win on court three, rendering the match tied at 2-2.
Â
Juan Estevarena put the Cougars on the brink of victory on court two, where he dispatched Milo Bergeron 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. But CofC couldn't quite pull off the comeback, as Benedikt Henning and Alec Angradi were both overcome in three sets, giving App State the 4-3 victory.
Â
The Cougars will look to bounce back in their upcoming trip out west, which will pit them against UC Riverside and Southern Utah on Sunday and Monday respectively.
