Cougars Can't Claw Past Thunderbirds in 4-3 Defeat

HURRICANE, UTAH – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (6-8) came close to completing the sweep of their two-match road trip, but the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (10-5) were just a little too much, handing the Cougars the 4-3 defeat.

The match was played at Hurricane High School in the town of Hurricane due to snow and frost in Cedar City. The venue was 45 minutes away and a whopping 2600 feet lower in elevation. Despite the comparatively less extreme altitude, the College still had to endure temperatures in the high 40's during their match.

Though Juan Estevarena and Benedikt Henning reunited to take their top flight doubles matchup 6-2, SSU was able to grab the early point by winning 6-4 and 6-1 on courts two and three respectively. The Thunderbirds pushed the edge to 2-0 in the match when Agustin Tamagnone steamrolled his way to a 6-1, 6-0 win on court three.

Alec Angradi was able to help right the ship, winning 6-4, 6-2 on court four against Guy Feigin. The Cougars played well in both top flight matches, where Benedikt Henning (6-0, 7-6) and Estevarena (7-5, 4-6, 6-1) each claimed points for the College. But ultimately, Southern Utah was able to clinch the match in the lower flights, with Pablo Guerra Garcia de Celis sealing the match on court five with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Easton Thomas.

"We keep fighting for chances and we keep knocking on the door of belief," head coach Jay Bruner said. "We're on a mission during these next four weeks, searching for that fourth point."

The Cougars will remain idle for the next ten days until their senior day encounter with The Citadel on March 29 at Patriots Point.
