CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The No. 15 (VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Poll) College of Charleston volleyball team travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Pitt Invite this weekend following the cancellation of the Coastal Carolina Classic due to the approach of Hurricane Florence. The Cougars will play two matches against Liberty on Friday at noon and Saturday at 4 pm in addition to a 7 pm matchup with No. 9 Pitt on Friday evening.
Tournament Preview
The Cougars travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the impromptu Pitt Invite following the cancellation of the Coastal Carolina Classic due to Hurricane Florence. There, the Cougars will take on Liberty twice in addition to a Friday night matchup with No. 9 Pitt.
Scouting Liberty
Liberty comes into the weekend with a 3-7 record following a sweep of Virginia on Tuesday. The Flames rank 44th in the nation in total service aces (60), led by Casey Goodwin's total of 13. Victoria Baptista paces the Flames attack with 2.14 kills per set.
Scouting Pitt
The Panthers carry an unblemished 9-0 record as the No. 9 team in the latest AVCA poll, and leads the nation in hitting percentage (.317). Kayla Lund paces the Panther attack with 4.06 kills per set and a .372 hitting percentage, while Sabrina Starks leads the defense with 1.36 blocks per set.
Rookie Raking
Freshman Sylvia Duggan delivered a sensational performance for the Cougars last week, averaging 3.31 kills and 3.62 digs per set en route to CAA Rookie of the Week honors. The Charlotte, N.C. native posted three double-doubles, including a 13-kill, 21-dig performance against Charleston Southern.
Best in Show
Kennedy Madison put on a show at the CofC Invitational last weekend, averaging 3.83 kills per set and hitting .327 to earn MVP honors. The senior right side totaled 46 kills during the weekend, and accounted for her first collegiate double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs against The Citadel.
Freed To Swing
Junior Lauren Freed has taken on a much larger role this season as a member of the Cougars' three-pronged attack unit that also includes seniors Kennedy Madison and Devon Rachel. The 5-10 outside hitter has reached double digits in kills in all but two matches thus far, and is on pace for a career season in both kills per set and hitting percentage.
