Broughton Sets Career High In Loss To Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Ericka Broughton set a career high with 12 points from the bench, the offense scoring 53 points on the nation's best defense, as the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell 76-53 to Drexel on Friday evening.
Deja Ford and Arynn Eady got the first points of the game for Charleston (5-12, 1-5 CAA) with both teams strong defensively through the opening five minutes.
Drexel (12-5, 4-2 CAA) used an 8-0 run to push their lead out to 17-6 and force a Charleston timeout with minutes remaining in the first period.
Charleston used their own 5-0 run to open the second quarter, Darien Huff knocking down her first three of the game and 23rd straight with at least one three, before feeding Broughton under the basket for an easy layup.
The reigning CAA regular season champions responded with a 17-0 run, opened by back-to-back three's and forcing five straight Charleston turnovers in the run, to push their lead out to 34-16 at half-time.
The hosts opened the third by making two straight baskets, Charleston responding with Huff knocking down her second three of the game and Ford adding a basket before the media timeout.
The Cougars continued to roll offensively in the third, making six of seven baskets in a row, Broughton hitting double-digits for the third time this season and second time in three games.
Broughton continued to make moves in the paint, two free throws setting a career high 12 points for the redshirt freshman, withShai Blanding making her first basket from the bench with a flowing layup in the paint.
Ford hit double-digits with a tough drive and layup, Drexel holding the Cougars at double-digits until the final whistle to take the 76-53 victory and move Charleston to 5-12, 1-5 in CAA play.
The Cougars now look to Sunday's matchup on the road at Delaware. Tip is set for 1 p.m. in Newark, Del., with the game broadcast live on Hens All-Access.
