
San Jose State Awaits Cougars In First West Coast Trip

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team hit the West Coast for a first-time matchup against San Jose State on Wednesday in San Jose, Calif. The Cougars and Spartans have never met on the court, first serve is set for 3 p.m. ET at the Spartan Tennis Complex as the Cougars look to make it four wins in a row after ending a long home stand with three victories at Patriots Point.
Scouting San Jose State
The Spartans opened the season with four straight wins over Sonoma State, Cal Poly, Santa Clara and San Francisco before falling in four straight matchups. No. 26 ranked Washington dispatched San Jose State on Feb. 23, the Spartans also falling to UC Santa Barbara, Pacific and Saint Mary's before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory over Marquette on Mar. 16. This will be the first meeting in history between the two programs with Charleston first-time visitors to the West Coast.

The Long Home Stand
Charleston went 7-2 between Mar. 6-17, facing nine teams in 11 days as preparation for the Colonial Athletic Association Championship held Apr. 17-20 in Elon, N.C. The long home stand began with four straight wins over Davidson, Coastal Carolina, Lehigh and Gardner-Webb, the Cougars falling to Richmond and UMASS before bouncing back with three more victories. Charleston took down Samford, George Washington and Fairfield to improve to 10-7 on the year heading into the back-end of the 2019 schedule.

Christi Woodson and Anastasia Palaska were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Mar. 19 after a 3-0 week in the No. 1 doubles spot. In strong starts to their senior seasons, Woodson and Turner Yates have both earned CAA Singles Player of the Week honors, Woodson on Feb. 27 and Yates on Jan. 30. Woodson picked up the weekly award after going 2-0 in flight one action against CAA rivals UNCW and in-city rivals Charleston Southern. Yates is 11-2 in singles play.
The Season Opening Weekend
Charleston picked up a season opening win over USC Upstate on Jan. 18, with senior duo Turner Yates and Sarah Zschunke winning on court three to claim the doubles point. Christi Woodson, Lily Labiche and Yates all winning in straight sets on courts one, two and five to give The College a 4-3 win.
Yates strong singles action continued against Wake Forest and Clemson, the senior earning the CAA Singles Player of the Week nod after pushing No. 98 ranked Deacon Peyton Pesavento to a narrow third set loss (6-3, 2-6, 4-6), before leveling up against the Tigers Miller-Krasilnikov, 3-6, 6-1, before the match was called early.

Charleston looks to the leadership of four seniors and one junior in head coach Angelo Anastapoulo's 28th season in charge. Laura Arciniegas, 2018 All-CAA Singles Second Team selection Christi Woodson, Turner Yates and Sarah Zschunke return alongside Anastasia Palaska, Ava Turner and Catalina Medici from a 2018 squad that finished 17-11 in the CAA Semifinal round. Newcomers include sophomore Eva Nyikos, a transfer from North Florida and sister to last season's senior Helena Nyikos, alongside Clara Errard and Lily LaBiche.
