CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four key extra base hits spelled the difference as Elon claimed a doubleheader from College of Charleston by scores of 8-3 and 9-1 Saturday at Patriots Point.
Aniz Roman went 4-for-4, including a double and triple, and scored two runs for the Cougars in the first game. The four hits were the most by a CofC player this season, and the freshman added another hit in the second game to raise her season average to .339.
Shealyn Starks had three hits in the opener, the third time in a span of eight games she has reached that total, and extended her hitting streak to seven games.
CofC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on singles by Roman and Noel Dominguez and a three-base error in right. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Phoenix scored five times, highlighted by a three-run double by Ally Repko.
Repko put the game out of reach with a two-run homer in the seventh. Roman tripled and scored on a single by Starks for the final Cougar run in the bottom of the inning.
Repko continued to torture the Cougars with a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game, and Allie Eith hit the left field foul pole for a grand slam in the fourth to give Elon a 7-0 lead. Singles by Jenna Helberg, Payton Wade and Kayla Gutierrez produced the lone CofC run in the bottom of the fourth.
The teams will wrap up their three-game series Sunday at noon.
