CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite doubling up Elon in the hit column, College of Charleston lost to the Phoenix, 3-0, in the final game of its Colonial Athletic Association series Sunday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars had six hits, including two more by Aniz Roman, but Elon took advantage of two errors to tally a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Roman had seven hits in the series and is 11-for-17 with six runs scored during a current five-game hitting streak to raise her season average from .269 to .348.
Payton Wade and Jenna Helberg added doubles, and CofC had hits in five of seven innings but left eight runners on base with five in scoring position.
Payton Lemire struck out three in 3 1/3 innings but was charged with the loss. McKenzie Weber tossed a six-hit shutout for the Phoenix.
The Cougars continue their homestand with a Tuesday doubleheader against Coastal Carolina beginning at 3 p.m.
