CHARLESTON, S.C. – Carli McCants struck out a career-high 12 in the first game, and Shealyn Starks drove in six runs on the day to lead College of Charleston to a doubleheader sweep of South Carolina State Wednesday at Patriots Point.
McCants allowed only two hits and one unearned run in an 8-1 victory in the first game. Starks had three hits including a game-ending triple in the fifth in a 10-2 win in the nightcap.
McCants struck out three in the first, third and fourth innings en route to eclipsing her previous high of eight set against Maine a year ago. It was the most strikeouts by a Cougar since Chandler Sparkman had 12 against Chattanooga last February 29.
Starks, Jenna Helberg and Noel Dominguez each drove in two runs to lead a 10-hit attack.
The Cougars banged out 14 hits in the second game, with Starks and Kayla Gutierrez both contributing three. Lauren Lozano earned a start at first base and responded with two doubles, including one which knocked in a run to give CofC a 1-0 lead after two.
Starks drove in the first of three runs in the third and then plugged left center gap with the bases loaded in the fifth to invoke the eight-run rule.
Lauren Sandor gave up four hits and struck out four in five innings to earn the win.
The Cougars return to CAA play this weekend with three games against Elon at Patriots Point. The Cougars and Phoenix hook up in a doubleheader Saturday at noon and a single game Sunday at noon.
