MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women's tennis team (17-6, 5-0) sent its four seniors out in style on Saturday, topping UNCW at Patriots Point.Â
With rain forecasted to move into the area, the event began with singles. After each court had completed one set, the match was hotly contested. The Cougars won the first set on three courts, while UNCW took the first set in the other three singles flights.
The first match to finish was on court two, where
Halli Trinkle made quick work of her opponent. Trinkle won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, improving to 18-3 on the season. It would not take long for Charleston to double its point total, as
Elizabeth Nowak won in straight sets on court five by a tally of 6-2, 6-2.
The Seahawks won on court one for their only point of the day, cutting into CofC's lead. The Cougars would respond with a straight set victory by
Clara Errard to go up 3-1 in the match.
Following a weather delay, just courts three and four remained unfinished.
Maja Jekauc clinched a win for the Cougars, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 to give Charleston a senior day victory.
Kate Earnhardt added a point, rallying to a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win.
The Cougars and Seahawks did not play doubles.
"The team was really flexible today with the conditions and starting singles first," head coach
Angelo Anastopoulo said. "That's a testament to the seniors and their leadership. for our four seniors to all win their last home matches is like a storybook ending. To be 5-0 in conference is great and will hopefully set us up for a good draw at the CAA Tournament. A big thank you to the fans for coming out and helping lift us in some tight matches. I'm really proud of the team today."
