CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The No. 1 seeded College of Charleston women's tennis team (18-6, 6-0) will begin postseason play on Friday when it begins the CAA Championships with a quarterfinal matchup against eighth-seeded Hofstra (4-11, 0-3) at 10:00 a.m. All matches of the tournament will be played at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University in Elon, N.C. Admission is free to all CAA Women's Tennis Championship matches.
Charleston enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the conference championships for the first time since joining the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cougars are vying for their first ever CAA title and their first NCAA regional appearance since 2013.
The Cougars finished the regular season with 18 wins, the most since 2017. From just March 11 to March 22, CofC reeled off ten consecutive victories for its longest winning streak since the 2008 season. The 6-1 win over UT-Martin that capped the streak gave head coach Angelo Anastopoulo his 550th women's tennis victory at The College. Anastopoulo currently has a women's record of 555-244 (.694) and a combined men's and women's record of 726-323 (.692).
Charleston is led by CAA Player of the Year candidates Halli Trinkle and Slade Coetzee. In addition to their doubles prowess which saw the pair of juniors finish 13-5 as a duo, Trinkle (19-3) and Coetzee (18-3) combined for a 37-6 singles record. Coetzee played all of her singles matches at the No. 1 position, while Trinkle spent all season at the No. 2 spot.
They are supported by freshman Maja Jekauc who impressed in her first collegiate season. The German rookie played all but one singles match in the third flight, posting a 15-5 singles record to place herself firmly in the CAA Rookie of the Year conversation. Maja enters the postseason on a hot streak, having won nine of her last ten matches. Jekauc primarily partnered with senior Elizabeth Nowak this season to the tune of a 10-5 doubles record.
Nowak held down the five spot in singles this season, posting a 12-6 mark. Nowak is one of four seniors that have provided essential leadership throughout CofC's magical season. Kate Earnhardt - a fellow senior - won seven of her final 10 matches to finish 11-10 in singles play. Earnhardt's doubles partner, Clara Errard, was another one of those seniors. Clara posted a 6-4 singles record, but did most of her damage alongside Earnahrdt on the doubles court. The duo of Errard and Earnhardt tallied a 10-5 doubles record this spring. Victoria Walter rounded out her collegiate career with a 7-6 singles mark, providing depth to CofC's lineup.
About Hofstra
Hofstra lost its final two matches to finish 4-11 on the season and 0-3 in CAA competition. The Pride went 1-9 away from home and scored just two points in three CAA matches this season. Hofstra is led by Kaitlyn Ferguson's 6-3 dual record. Ferguson has won three consecutive singles matches.
Charleston and Hofstra have never met in the CAA Championships. The Cougars are 2-0 against the Pride since joining the Colonial.
