CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston sophomore two-way player
Cole Mathis was named a Second Team All-American utility man by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Wednesday afternoon.
Getting it done both at the plate and on the mound, Mathis was named a Second Team performer in a utility role after batting a team-best .330 with 20 doubles, nine home runs and tied for a team-lead 51 RBI. Mathis slugged at a .575 mark and got on base at a .439 clip for a team-high 1.014 OPS. The sophomore Cataula, Ga., native also drew a team-high 41 walks and collected 115 bases scoring 48 times.
The sophomore right hander also led the Charleston starting rotation with a 3.45 ERA going 5-1 with a save in his 14 appearances. Mathis won three of his final four decisions as well as grabbing his first collegiate save in a 2-1 win over William & Mary in the CAA Championships.
Mathis' nod from the NCBWA gives the Cougars a Second Team All-American back-to-back seasons after
William Privette earned NCBWA recognition last year. Mathis also becomes the 12th Cougar to earn NCBWA All-American honors since 1999 and sixth to earn a spot on the second team.
Wednesday's accolade is the second this postseason for Mathis after being named to the All-CAA Second Team.
