Mt. Pleasant, S.C.—College of Charleston women's soccer went toe-to-toe with Pac-12 foe Utah at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point on Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars nearly match the Utes on the offensive end firing 12 shots on Utah's 14 with six coming on goal, but it was the visitors finding the net twice to escape with the win.
Charleston had two early chances to break a scoreless tie as Olivia Freitas and Delaney Dawes sent shots on net in the 16th and 18th minutes, but Utah's Kasey Wardle kept the game even with two saves.
Utah scored both tallies in a three-minute span as Katie O'Kane and Courtney Brown found the back of the net in the 21st and 23rd minute.
Following the two tallies, Utah took three more shots on goal, but Charleston's goalkeeper Savannah Barron prevented the Utes from adding on. The Cougars countered with four shots following the Utah goals to close the opening half.
The Utes attempted to capture more momentum within the first ten minutes of the second half with three shots and one on target, but Barron deterred the attempts to keep it 2-0. The junior netminder would finish the day with four saves in 61 minutes of action before Bailey Wood added a pair of saves over the final 29 minutes.
Freitas sent two shots on target in the final five minutes but Evie Vitall kept the Cougars off the board.
Quote from Coach Michner
"I am so incredibly proud of this group and how they attack the game from the start. Utah is very good and so well coached that we knew we had to be at our best to have a chance. Over the course of the 90 minutes, it was evident that we belong on the same pitch with them and, apart from two key moments, there wasn't much to separate the sides today. The result is disappointing, but our effort and intensity today was exceptional."
