CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston baseball team plays host to the Liberty Flames tomorrow in a midweek game at Patriots Point. The Cougars will be looking to bounce back after a trio of tight losses to Nebraska over the weekend. This will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
Last Time Out
Charleston played host to Nebraska last weekend. The series was originally scheduled for four games but a washout on Friday meant the two would only face off three times. Charleston held leads in all three games but were unable to hang on for a win in the series. In the opener, Charleston's Hayden Thomas and Alex Lyon combined to limit the Huskers to just one run through eight innings. In the ninth, the Huskers rallied to tie the game at 5-5 before scoring in the extra frame to pick up the win.
On Saturday, a Cole Singsank homer put the Cougs up 2-0 early in the game. Jake Brink produced another strong outing, limiting the Huskers to just one run over 6.2 innings of work. After Nebraska scored in the sixth, Charleston answered in the seventh to lead 4-1. The Nebraska bats got going late again, scoring twice in both the eighth and ninth to take the game 5-4. Sunday, the Cougars jumped out 2-0 in the first through a homer by Trotter Harlan. A Kevin Madden RBI single in the third put the Cougs up 3-0. Down again, the Huskers got things going with the bats, scoring twice in the third and once in the sixth to tie the game at three. The scored remained that way until the ninth when Nebraska plated two to sweep the weekend.
Scouting the Flames
Liberty comes to town after getting swept at #22 Coastal Carolina last weekend. The Flames dropped a tight on in the opener in Conway. Leading 7-5 into the ninth, the Flames bullpen was unable to secure the win as Coastal walked-off with a two RBI single. The teams played a double header on Sunday and Liberty suffered late again in game one. Holding a 5-2 lead heading into the seventh, the Flames surrendered three in the seventh and then seven in the eighth. In game two, Coastal jumped out to a lead early and never looked back for a weekend sweep. The Flames have also faced off with a pair of CAA foes earlier this season. Liberty hosted Hofstra for a three game set, going 1-2. Before heading to Coastal, Liberty took on UNCW in a midweek game, winning on the road 2-1.
The Flames top bat heading into the weekend is Aidan Sweatt. The senior infielder comes into the game with a .349 average with four doubles, 10 RBI and a pair of homers. Kane Kepley has also enjoyed a solid start to the season, hitting .295 with a pair of homers. Kepley also leads the team in walks with 11.
