NEWARK, DEL. – College of Charleston pitching limited the top offensive team in the CAA to only two earned runs in a doubleheader split against Delaware on Friday.
The Blue Hens won 5-1 in game one, and the Cougars bounced back to take the nightcap by a score of 2-1. The games were the first in conference play for both teams.
McKenna Kelly tossed 5.1 shutout innings while striking out four in the second game and earned the win on the strength of consecutive RBI doubles by Halle Cannon and Karlee Hughes in the top of the sixth.
Ryley Kutter relieved Kelly with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the sixth and induced a fly out and pop out to escape the jam. Delaware scored its lone run in the seventh before Kutter slammed the door shut to pick up her first career save.
Payton Lemire and Kutter combined to allow only one earned run in the opener. Lemire went the first 4.2 frames while Kutter allowed two hits in 1.1 innings of shutout relief.
The Cougars took a 1-0 lead on a bases loaded passed ball in the first but stranded four runners in scoring position over the first four innings, allowing Delaware to rally with two runs in the second and three in the fifth.
The teams conclude their series Saturday at 11 a.m.
