ROCK HILL, S.C. – The College of Charleston men's soccer team (4-8-2, 1-3-1 CAA) earned a 1-1 draw against Winthrop (1-9-2, 1-3 Big South) at Eagle Field on Tuesday evening.
The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal from
Lennon Gill before Winthrop tied the game in the 69
th minute. All throughout the match, the Cougars put pressure on the opposition, outshooting the Eagles 12-6, earning more corners (7-6) and holding the advantage in shots on goal (6-3). However, Charleston was unable to capitalize on its opportunities and came away with a 1-1 tie.
RECAP — Starting off on the attack, Charleston earned three corners in the first four minutes before
Lennon Gill took the game's first shot attempt in the sixth minute, however both teams remained scoreless through the start of the match.
After coming up empty on his first shot, Gill broke through in the 19
th minute and put the Cougars up 1-0 thanks to a beautiful pass from
Ryan Watson.
Although both teams had three shots and three corners in the first half, all three of Charleston's shots were on goal, while Winthrop did not have a shot on target in the first frame, and the Cougars took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Cougars took three shots in the first 9 minutes, but were unable to convert. After weathering Charleston's attack, Winthrop tied the game with a goal in the 69
th minute.
With 20 minutes to play, the Cougars showed a sense of urgency as they fired off multiple shots in an attempt to regain the lead, but were denied by the Eagles. Withstanding another push from Charleston, Winthrop earned three corners and had a shot on goal as they looked to take the advantage in the waning minutes. However, solid defense and a save by
Jourdan Schumacher in the 86
th minute kept the game tied as the Cougars came away from Eagle Field with a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.
UP NEXT — Charleston returns to Patriots Point for a Coastal Athletic Association matchup with Elon Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m. Saturday's game will also be senior day where nine Cougars will be honored prior to the contest.
