LAST TIME OUT — Charleston enters the match 4-8-2 (1-3-1) following a 1-1 road draw against Winthrop at Eagle Field Tuesday night. The Cougars jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute after
Ryan Watson sent a beautiful pass to
Lennon Gill who scored his second goal of the year. Winthrop then stopped Charleston from increasing its lead before tying the game in the 69th minute.
All throughout the match, the Cougars put pressure on the opposition, outshooting the Eagles 12-6, earning more corners (7-6) and holding the advantage in shots on goal (6-3). However, Charleston was unable to capitalize on its opportunities and came away with a 1-1 tie against Winthrop.
SCOUTING THE PHOENIX — The Phoenix come
into the contest with an overall record of 6-2-5 and an undefeated mark of 3-0-2 in conference play. Elon is 2-2-2 on the road and is coming off a 1-0 win over UNCW last Saturday.
MATCHUP HISTORY — The Cougars hold a 12-13-2 all-time record against the Phoenix. Elon has won the last seven matches between the two squads, with Charleston's last win coming in 2017. Earlier this season, the Phoenix defeated the Cougars 1-0 in the conference opener.
AWARDS — The Cougars have earned two CAA Player of the Week awards so far this season.
Jourdan Schumacher garnered the Defensive Player of the Week honor on September 15 after posting two clean sheets with eight saves as he helped the Cougars defeat USC Upstate 1-0 and earn a point against Campbell in a 0-0 draw earlier that week.
Ben Bagshaw was named the Offensive Player of the Week on September 29 after scoring a pair of goals in just over 10 minutes propelling Charleston to a 3-1 win over William & Mary on September 27.
CAA STANDINGS — The top two teams from each division and the next two best overall teams in the conference will earn a spot in the CAA Tournament and the right to play for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Cougars are currently in fourth place with a total of four points in the South Division, but are just two points behind UNCW who currently holds the last at large bid to the CAA Tournament. With just two conference games remaining after Saturday, a win on Saturday could potentially move Charleston into a tie for fifth and inside the top-six.
