Cougars Defeat Hampton in CAA Opener

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – College of Charleston erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, and Lily Thorpe picked up her first career win with two shutout innings to lead the Cougars to a 9-4 win over Hampton in the CAA opener for both teams.

Game Summary
  • The Cougars fell behind 3-0 before beginning their comeback in the second on a double by Savannah Scott for her first career hit and RBI.
  • Singles by Jay Wrightsman and Julia Sitterding and stolen bases by both led to a two-run double by Sierra Paradis that tied it in the third.
  • The teams traded runs in the fourth with the Cougars scoring on a single by Karlee Hughes, a stolen base and an RBI single by Sally Trent.
  • Kendall Thackston went the first four innings before Lily Thorpe entered in the fifth with the game tied at 4.
  • Thorpe retired the Pirates in order in the fifth but had to escape a bases loaded jam in the sixth that was created by three infield singles.
  • That set the stage for the Charleston uprising in its half of the sixth that was highlighted by a Paradis single for her third RBI of the game.
  • A dropped fly ball in left resulted in three more Cougar runs that blew the game open.
  • Mackenzie Mathis finished in the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning including a pair of strikeouts.
