CHARLESTON, S.C. - Ben Bagshaw scored a pair of goals just over 10 minutes apart spanning the first and second halves to lift College of Charleston to a 3-1 win over William & Mary in a CAA contest Saturday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars picked up a much-needed three points in capturing their first conference victory of the year. Charleston (4-6-1, 1-2-1 CAA) will look for the season sweep of the Tribe when the teams meet again in Williamsburg, Va., on October 25.
The offensive-oriented contest saw both teams fire 17 shots including four by Bagshaw. The Cougar attack consistently pressured the Tribe throughout the game, producing seven shots on goal and eight corner kicks.
Tied at 1-1 late in the first half, Bagshaw tallied what proved to be the game winner with five minutes left before halftime when he scored off an assist by
Ezra White. His second goal and second brace by a Cougar this season was achieved five minutes into the second half when he connected off a pass from
Stian Bendvold.
Bagshaw's two goals lifted him into a tie for the team lead with four and puts him in sole possession of the top spot on the Cougars with 10 points.
Charleston struck early when
Pavel Dashin finished off a series of nifty passes to put Charleston in front 1-0.
Issaka Salifu passed to
Caio Hughes, who touched it to Dashin. After the William & Mary goalkeeper came out to play the ball, Dashin poked it past him for his second goal of the year. The Tribe tied it in the 28th minute before the Bagshaw heroics.
The Cougars are off until next Saturday when they play a 6 p.m. game at Campbell. Charleston is back home on October 7 for a non-conference matchup against North Florida.
