
Women's Tennis Set to Face No. 2 North Texas in NIT Quarterfinals

ROME, Ga. – The No. 7 College of Charleston women's tennis team is set to face No. 2 North Texas in the UTR Sports NIT Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday afternoon.
I'm really proud of the Cougars for receiving a postseason invitation to the NIT, Head Coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. North Texas is a strong school and it will be a great challenge. We’re excited to be out there one more time.
Launched in 2023, the NIT Championship was created by UTR Sports to allow men's and women's teams to gain valuable postseason experience. The 2026 NIT Championship will feature an eight team single elimination tournament with all matches hosted at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. from May 5-7.

FULL FIELD – The full eight team field consists of No. 1 Kansas State, No. 2 North Texas, No. 3 Arkansas State, No. 4 North Alabama, No. 5 Army, No. 6 McNeese State, No. 7 Charleston and No. 8 Northern Illinois.
ANASTOPOULO – After 35 years as the head coach of the College of Charleston women's tennis team and 24 years as The College's Director of Tennis, Angelo Anastopoulo has announced his
retirement.
Anastopoulo began his 34th season and became the longest tenured coach at The College in the fall of 2024, passing legendary coach Ralph Lundy, who led the men's soccer program for 33 seasons.
What I've learned over the course of my career is that it takes a village to run a successful program, said Anastopoulo. I want to thank the many people and staff who helped our players physically and academically, the individual who strung all of our rackets, the staff at Patriots Point, the groundskeepers, the generous donors, the wonderful alumni, all the tennis officials and the many talented assistant coaches who helped coach our teams.
Anastopoulo will coach the Cougars in the NIT and retire after the tournament. Read more about Anastopoulo's retirement here.
MATCHUP HISTORY VS. NORTH TEXAS — This will be the first ever matchup between the Charleston and North Texas.
SCOUTING THE MEAN GREEN — The Mean Green finished the season 17-8 overall and made the American Conference Tournament Quarterfinals where they fell to Rice. Junior Carolina Laydner earned an American All-Conference selection after posting an impressive 15-3 overall record while going 11-2 at line one and 4-1 at line two.
AWARDS – Five Cougars have been awarded CAA postseason honors, including Sia Cariov for All-CAA First Team Singles, Oziera Ahmad and Jaiden McKee for All-CAA Third Team Singles, Cariov and Francesca Salvato for All-CAA First Team Doubles and Ahmad and Riley Trinkle for All-CAA Third Team Doubles.
UP NEXT – If the Cougars win against North Texas, CofC will take on the winner of No. 3 Arkansas State and No. 6 McNeese State in the NIT Semifinals on Wednesday, May 6.
