Junior Amanda Andrews' goal with less than a minute left in double overtime lifted the College of Charleston women's soccer team to a crucial victory over Furman, 3-2, in Greenville, S.C., on Thursday evening. The victory marked the 100th victory in the history of CofC women's soccer.
With the victory, CofC improved to 8-7-2 overall and 6-3-0 in the SoCon. The loss drops Furman to 8-9-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the SoCon.
The Cougars had two strong chances within the first 15 minutes of the first half. Freshman Emily Morgan missed a penalty kick in the third minute and a shot attempt by senior Teryn Schuetz in the 12th minute hit the crossbar.
However, freshman Julie Romanik scored her first goal of the season in the 26th minute to give CofC the advantage, 1-0. Romanik deflected a corner kick attempt by sophomore Danielle Jordan to net the score.
Furman responded with two goals in the second half to take the lead, 2-1. Rachel Fry scored the first goal for Furman in the 62nd minute, through an assist from Anna Betton. Gena Villari scored the second goal of the match for Furman in the 73rd minute, with an assist from both Emily Krankowski and Sara El-Shami.
Freshman Brittany Schneider scored her second goal of the season with less than a minute left in regulation to tie the match, 2-2. Senior Teryn Schuetz provided the crossing pass for Schneider to score the equalizer.
"I told the team after regulation that we needed to win tonight's match if we wanted to control our destiny in the SoCon," said head coach Kevin Dempsey. "The girls had such incredible focus and realized that we couldn't waste the opportunity we were given by playing in overtime."
Andrews scored her goal in the 109th minute by netting home a corner kick from Jordan, who had two assists in the match. The goal was Andrews' first of the season.
"We've been in so many close matches this season and lost some heartbreakers earlier this season," said Dempsey. "This win shows how much our young team has matured by not giving up anytime during a match."
CofC now has six SoCon victories this season, the second most ever in a season for the Cougars. The 2003 team won eight SoCon matches in its season.
Tonight's win against Furman was only the Cougars' second victory ever over the Paladins in 16 matches. The other win happened on Sept. 29, 2005, when CofC defeated Furman, 1-0.
The Cougars play their final regular season match on Oct. 29 against UNC Greensboro at Patriots Point. The match begins at 1 p.m.
