
Spartans edge CofC in OT of final game, 3-2

Greensboro, N.C. -- An overtime goal by Katie Evans pushed UNC Greensboro over the College of Charleston, 3-2 in the final regular-season SoCon women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at UNCG Stadium.
The loss drops the Cougars' record to 9-7-2- overall and 6-2-2 in the conference. The Spartans clinch the SoCon regular season title and finish 12-2-1 overall and 9-0-0 in league play.
CofC struck early when Christy Barrow, a sophomore midfielder, scored her fourth goal of the season. She received a pass from Megan Manthey and wove her way through the Spartan defense. Barrow shot past UNCG goalkeeper Katherine Ryan to put the Cougars up 1-0 (13:55).
The Spartans responded with their own first-half goal. Tina Karam passed the ball of to Karla Davis who headed the ball past sophomore goalie Sarah Wiggers and into the net (22:09).
The teams battled through the rest of the half with both teams having several scoring opportunities. Karam had a chance to put the Spartans up 2-1 with the goalkeeper out of position and the ball sitting on the goal line but couldn't find a way to put the ball in the net as the teams went into halftime tied.
After playing much of the second half without a goal both teams added points to the board. In the 73rd minute, Karam put UNCG up 2-1 after connecting with teammate Jen Bronson in the box. Jenn Partenheimer took a shot from the six-yard line that rebounded out to Bronson. Bronson collected the ball for a shot and the ball rebounded onto the foot of Karam who put it into the left side of the net for the score.
Five minutes later Brittany Schneider evened the score once again. Schneider caught a slotted pass through the UNCG defense from Manthey and put the ball past the outstretched hand of Ryan to tie the game at 2-2 (77:37).
Despite several opportunities, neither squad scored the rest of the second half, sending the game into overtime. UNCG controlled the ball for the better part of the overtime and got the game-winner when Kelly Attayek connected with Evans inside the box for the UNCG victory.
UNCG held a 21-11 shot advantage with Manthey, a jurnior from Ferndale, Wash., leading the Cougars with four shots. Wiggers made nine save on the afternoon, while Ryan made three stops.
Charleston will host a first-round, post-season game at 1 p.m. on Sun., Nov. 4, at Patriots Point Field.
