
CofC Women?s Basketball Opens with 63-46 Loss at Coastal Carolina

Coastal Carolina used a 13-1 run to end the first half and a 19-2 run to end the second to hold back College of Charleston rallies, defeating the Cougar women's basketball team, 63-46, in action tonight in front of 393 fans at Kimbel Arena in Conway, S.C.
The Cougars fall to 0-1 overall, while the Chanticleers improve to 2-0
The Cougars opened with a 5-0 run the first three-and-half minutes before settling on a 12-4 lead with 15:01 to go in the first half. With Charleston leading by eight, 24-16, with 7:07 to go in the half Coast Carolina's Lacey Lyons sparked the offense, rattling off 13 straight points, to lead the Chanticleers on a 13-1 run to take the 29-25 lead at intermission.
CofC shot 38.5 percent from the floor in the first half, while CCU shot 35.7. Charleston held the 19-15 edge in rebounding and a 7-2 mark in steals.
Charleston fought its way back in the second half to take a one-point lead, 43-42, with 8:22 to go in the game off a layup by Erika Smith. Coastal Carolina responded as it did in the first half, finishing the game on a 19-2 run to take the 63-46 win.
Leading all scorers was Lyons with her 22 on the night. Coastal's Amanda Stull followed with 12. The Chanticleers were 18-20 from the free throw line with Lyons a perfect six-for-six. Lyons also led the team with seven rebounds.
Charleston was led by Ericka Williams with her 11 points, just one shy of her career-high. Williams was two-for-three from beyond the three-point arc, a career-high. Nikki Williams and Tonia Gerty followed in scoring for the Cougars with seven each. Williams (Nikki) paced the team with nine rebounds.
The Cougars shot just 29.0 percent in the second half to finish the game with 33.3 percent. Coastal finished the game with a 35.1 field goal percentage after shooting 34.5 percent in the second half. The Chanticleers led 42-34 in rebounds for the game and had fewer turnovers, 19-12.
Charleston opens its home schedule Monday, Nov. 19th as it hosts UNC Wilmington at the John Kresse Arena.
