
Cougar Comeback Falls Short to Spartans, 70-61

Trailing by as much as 23 points in the second half, the College of Charleston women's basketball team pulled to within five with a minute-and-a-half but could not get any farther and fell to the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 70-61, in front of 556 fans at Fleming Gym in Greensboro, N.C.
The Cougars drop their sixth straight to go to 10-16 overall and 5-10 in the Southern Conference. The six-game skid is the longest since the team dropped eight straight during the 2003-04 season. UNC Greensboro improves to 18-8 and 11-4 in the league.
Down 49-26 with 12:59 left in the game, the Cougars outscored the Spartans 31-13 over the next 11 minutes to only trail by five, 62-57, with two minutes to go. UNC Greensboro connected on eight-of-eight free throws, including four by Kristin Boone, to hold on the lead and the eventual 70-61 win.
UNC Greensboro opened the game with 10 unanswered points. Charleston ended the drought with a three-pointer by Nikki Williams with 15:45 to go in the half. The Cougars only scored one more basket over the next eight minutes, a field goal by Melissa Chambers at 14:23, and trailed 27-5 before a two-pointer by Jade Hughes at the 7:16 mark ended the second drought of the half. The Cougars out-scored the Spartans slightly the rest of the half, 11-8, and went into the locker room down by 17 at 35-18.
Charleston shot 25 percent from the field in the first half and improved to 32.4 in the second to finish with 28.8 for the night. UNC Greensboro shot 48.4 from the field in the first half and 42.3 in the second for 45.6 for the game. The Cougars were 19-for-21 from the free throw for a 90.5 percentage, a season high. The Spartans shot just 61.9 percent from the line (13-21). UNCG held the slight 43-42 advantage in rebounds and turnovers, 19-17. Charleston was dour-for-16 from behind the three-point arc, while UNCG was five-for-16, all of which came from Jasmine Byrd, who led all scorers with 23.
Following Byrd's 23 points was Kristin Boone with 11. Kaleah Latham pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the team. Brittany Frazier posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Charleston was led by Hughes with her 21 points, just two shy of her career-high of 23. Sarah Moye pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Cougars.
Charleston is next in action Saturday, Feb. 17th as the team travels to Chattanooga for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
