Pitcher Nick Chigges tied the school record for most career wins and Oliver Marmol belted a grand slam as the College of Charleston held on for an 8-5 win over Wofford in Southern Conference baseball action before 178 at Russell C. King Field on Friday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 19-7 overall and 4-0 in league play. Wofford fell to 16-12 and 0-4. Game two of the three-game series is Saturday at 1:00.
Chigges (4-0) picked up his 24th career win (24-4) and tied the school mark set initially by Scott Oliver who finished his career with a 24-19 record from 1996-99. Chigges allowed three runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over seven innings of work.
Marmol, a junior, blasted his first career grand slam to cap the Cougars' five-run second inning. After Gabe Marchant walked with one out and the bases loaded to force home Graham Maiden for a 1-0 lead, Marmol hit the first pitch from Wofford righty Austin Redwine down the left field line for his third homer of the season and a 5-0 CofC lead.
Stuart Haywood's sacrifice fly in the fourth gave CofC a 6-0 lead and Chris Campbell's RBI single to left in the sixth gave the Cougars a 7-1 lead.
Mike Gilmartin's sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot to right in the seventh, cut Charleston's lead to 7-3. Haywood added a RBI single in the eighth to give Charleston an 8-3 lead.
Wofford threatened in the ninth using four walks and an error to score twice and cut the margin to 8-5. But, lefty Michael Bunton retired pinch-hitter Keith Munns on a come-backer to the mound to end the game with the bases loaded.
Redwine (4-2) suffered the loss surrendering eight runs on 11 hits over eight innings. Bunton recorded his first save of the season.
Campbell had three hits and an RBI while Marchant added two doubles and scored three times to pace Charleston.
