
Marmol Sets School Mark; CofC Downs GSU, 19-6

Oliver Marmol banged out a school-record six hits and 27th-ranked College of Charleston scored 12 runs in the third inning en route to a 19-6 win over Georgia Southern in the opener of its three-game Southern Conference series before 1,514 at J.I. Clements Stadium on Friday.
With the win, Charleston's seventh in a row, the Cougars improved to 26-8 overall and 9-1 in league play. The Eagles fell to 19-19 and 2-8. Game two of the series is Saturday at 1:30.
Marmol had singles in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. He led off the eighth with a double and broke the school record with a two-run homer to left center in the ninth, his fourth of the year. Marmol added a stolen base, four runs scored and three RBI.
Charleston broke at 1-1 third inning tie when they sent 18 batters to the plate in the top of the third inning scoring 12 times on 11 hits. Both the 12 runs and 11 hits tied Charleston records for most in an inning. Ben Lasater and Gabe Marchant hit three-run homers in the frame and finished with four RBI each on the night. Marchant's blast was his sixth of the season and cleared the pine trees down the right field line. Lasater's shot cleared the batter's eye in center field and was his team's-leading eighth of the season.
For Charleston, Chris Campbell added two hits and four RBI, while Michael Harrington had four hits including a school-record tying three doubles. Graham Maiden had three hits as part of the Cougars' 24-hit attack.
Jeremiah Parker and Chris Shehan homered for the Eagles, who also got three hits from Matt Miller.
Nick Chigges (6-0) picked up the win allowing three runs with nine strikeouts over the first six innings. Brian Wilkerson (4-6) suffered the loss surrendering seven runs on nine hits over two innings of work.
