
CofC's Chigges, Pawlowski Earn Southern Conference Baseball Honors

College of Charleston right-hander Nick Chigges was named the 2007 Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year, while head coach John Pawlowski was named the SoCon Coach of the Year, in a vote of conference coaches, it was announced on Wednesday.
Chigges, a senior from Columbia, S.C., currently leads the SoCon with an 11-0 and a 2.63 earned run average. Chigges also leads the SoCon in innings pitched (102.2), strikeouts (109) and lowest opponent batting average (.223). Chigges is the first pitcher in Southern Conference history to be named Pitcher of the Year two times. Charleston has won the past four SoCon Pitcher of the Year honors. Ryan Johnson won the award in 2004, Brett Harker in 2005 and Chigges in 2006.
Pawlowski has won his third Coach of the Year award in four years after leading the Cougars to a 39-17 regular-season record, including a 20-7 mark in conference play. The Cougars claimed a share of the SoCon regular season championship, their fourth consecutive league title. Charleston won regular season crowns in 2004 and 2005, and the league's tournament title in 2006.
College of Charleston had seven players named to either the first-team or second-team all-conference squad while regular-season co-champion Western Carolina landed six players on the all-league teams including five first-team members. The Citadel had four players honored and Appalachian State had two players named to the teams while Davidson, Elon, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro and Wofford had one player each named first-team or second-team All-Southern Conference.
Western Carolina's Kenny Smith was named the SoCon Player of the Year after batting .412 with 18 home runs and 79 RBI. The Citadel's Richard Jones, who batted .331 with 12 home runs and 55 RBI was selected as the league's Freshman of the Year.
