MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - No. 65 College of Charleston women's tennis sent its seniors off on a high note as the Cougars defeated Georgia Southern 6-1 on Senior Day to win the Southern Conference regular-season title outright.
Charleston's win gives the team a perfect 10-0 conference record, marking the first time the Cougars have gone undefeated in league play since joining the Southern Conference in 1998-99.
"I'm certainly very proud of the girls and everything they've accomplished this season," head coach Angelo Anastopoulo said. "It makes it even more special to share it with the men's tennis team, who also won the regular-season title today. We can't wait to host the conference tournament."
CofC (18-9, 10-0 SoCon) swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage. Senior Holly Dowse (Tuncurry, Australia/Forster) and junior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand/New Mexico) cruised to an 8-0 victory, giving the No. 37 pair its ninth straight win at the top spot. Seniors Laura Borza (Toronto, Ontario/Mary Ward Secondary) and Anna Lee Evans (Vilas, N.C./Watauga) earned an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 spot and junior Kinsey Casey (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) teamed up with freshman Irene Viana (Paris, France/Lycee de Montgeron) to pull out an 8-4 victory as the second seed.
Dowse and Evans won their singles matches to finish 2-0 on Senior Day. Evans was the first Cougar to earn a singles victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot. She was followed by Hayman who also recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win as the second seed. Sophomore Caroline Newman's (Greensboro, N.C./Page) 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot gave CofC a 4-0 lead and secured the regular-season title for the Cougars.
Playing at the top spot in singles, Dowse earned a 6-1 victory over Georgia Southern's Ali Beavers before conceding the second set by the same score. She won the tiebreaker 10-8 to punctuate the victory for Charleston.
The Eagles scored one point off Jessica Fuller's win over Borza in the No. 5 spot after winning a 10-3 tiebreaker. Georgia Southern falls to 11-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference.
This is the first Southern Conference regular-season title for Coach Anastopoulo and his squad who will host the conference tournament on Apr. 24-25 as the top seed. The team will be looking to repeat as Southern Conference champions after upsetting Furman in the finals last year.
