
Offense Returns In Baseball?s 13-2 Win Over Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Redshirt-junior 3B Matt Leeds (Boca Raton, Fla.) had four hits and four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the third inning and junior LHP Josh Renfro (Bradenton, Fla.) struck out six over six innings as #21 College of Charleston roughed up Davidson College 13-2 Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Cougars take the weekend series from the Wildcats and improve to 14-3 on the season and 2-1 in the Southern Conference.
Charleston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run to right by redshirt-freshman DH Daniel Aldrich (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and extended the lead to 4-0 in the third on Leeds' sixth round-tripper of the season. Senior CF Cole Rakar (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) singled to left and redshirt-junior C Rob Kral (Randolph, N.J.) walked before Leeds crushed the ball to straightaway center field.
The Cougars added three more runs in the fifth, running the score to 7-0 before Davidson broke the shutout bid with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Kral walked and Leeds singled to right, moving Kral to third before Aldrich roped a RBI single to left. Redshirt-graduate student 1B Ryan Daniels (Victoria, Texas) and junior RF Marty Gantt (N. Augusta, S.C.) both added RBI singles for the Cougars in the inning, while a sacrifice fly to center by Calvin Singlebaum accounted for the Davidson tally.
Charleston broke the game open, batting around the order in the seventh to score five runs and open a 12-1 advantage. Senior SS Jamie Holler (Rock Hill, S.C.) reached on an error to open the inning and Gantt followed with a single up the middle. Rakar loaded the bases with a bunt down the third-base line and Kral singled home two runs with a base hit to right. Leeds collected his fourth RBI of the game with a single to right and redshirt-junior LF Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla.) knocked a RBI double to left. Aldrich completed the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep left.
Davidson score a run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI fielder's choice by Drew Gadaire and the Cougars plated a run in the ninth, as redshirt-junior PH Ross Hanna (Greer, S.C.) lined a RBI single into right. Kral collected a career-high four walks on the afternoon, tying the season-high from earlier this season by Gantt against UNC Wilmington on Feb. 22. Gantt added three hits, while Aldrich collected three RBIs.
Renfro picked up his third win of the season, allowing one run on four hits and walking one. Brian Russell took the loss for Davidson, giving up three runs on two hits and walking three in 2-1/3 innings. The Cougars roughed up eight Wildcat pitchers for 17 hits on the afternoon.
The Cougars return to action at home Wednesday evening as they host Jacksonville University at Patriots Point at 5:00 p.m. Charleston picked up a 9-5 win over the Dolphins on the road March 1.
