MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team drew, 1-1, with Georgia Southern in a double-overtime Southern Conference match at Patriots Point on Thursday evening. The teams, which came into the match with identical SoCon records, each take away a point in the standings.
“It's a hard earned point,” said head coach Christian Michner. “I tell you, Georgia Southern is well coached and they compete. They work hard for every ball and we had our work cut out for us tonight. We felt like we created a good run of play and certainly created chances but they had their chances as well and that's soccer.
“You have to be sure that for 90 minutes or 110 minutes or whatever it may take, that you're focused and playing as well as you can for every minute of the match. Predominantly, we did that tonight.”
The Cougars produced a creative attacking front and came away with a 21-11 shot advantage and 5-2 corner kick edge. The Cougars put a season-high 10 shots on frame.
CofC struck first in the 21st minute with a dazzling individual effort by Nicole Koretsky (Manalapan, N.J.) for the freshman's second goal of the season. Manalapan collected the ball near the left corner flag and made a move along the endline to dribble past two Eagle defenders. Her run took her near the top of the six-yard box where she blasted a low ball across the goal mouth and into the far-side netting.
The Eagles caught the Cougars in transition and equalized the match on a counter attack in the 35th minute. Callie O'Connor got between the central defenders and played a through ball to Alex Murphy on the left wing. Murphy collected the ball in stride and tucked it into the back of the net to draw the teams even.
The second half and overtime periods flowed evenly from end to end with Cougars controlling a narrow possession of the play.
Though the Cougars would outshoot the Eagles 13-6 the rest of the way, the final three periods wouldn't yield a goal and the teams ultimately split the result.
The Cougars complete their weekend on the road with a SoCon match at Davidson on Sunday, Oct. 7. The teams will kickoff at 2 p.m.
“Davidson is another very good team and they won at Citadel tonight,” said Michner. “We'll have to make sure that we take these next two days to recover and repair and be ready. We'll have our work cut out for us on Sunday; that's for sure. But if we come out with the same commitment that we did tonight, then we feel good about our chances.”
