
Toledo Snaps CofC?s Winning Streak With 5-2 Decision

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Toledo limited No. 29 College of Charleston to four hits en route to a 5-2 victory in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon from Patriots Point.
The Cougars (10-2) snapped their nine-game win streak with the loss, while Toledo (3-6) picked up a big win after playing their fifth-straight game against a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Rockets stymied Charleston's offense with 13 strikeouts and only two runs allowed. CofC was also outhit by an opponent for just the fourth time this season as Toledo knocked 11 hits to Charleston's four.
Toledo starter Ross Achter (1-0) picked up the victory with 5.0 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five. Reliever Steven Calhoun was just as effective for the next three innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed.
CofC starter Tyler Thornton (0-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season as he allowed eight hits through 5.1 innings and three runs. Nathan Helvey pitched 1.2 innings on his bullpen day, striking out two but allowing one run.
Toledo's Deion Tansel and Tyler Baar each tallied two RBIs, while Jacob Britt and Cory Finkler combined for four hits and three runs scored.
CofC's Morgan Phillips hit an RBI single in the third inning to score Nick Pappas, while Ben Boykin extended his hitting streak with a ninth-inning solo home run, his first of the season.
A fast-paced game in cold conditions, the score was knotted at 1-1 until the sixth inning when Toledo used two singles by Tansel and Dan Zuchowski and a two-RBI double from Baar to take a 3-1 lead. The Rockets added to the lead with runs in the seventh and ninth innings.
