COLUMBIA, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team was tagged with its first loss of the season in a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Milwaukee in the Garnett and Black Classic on Friday evening.
“It was a tough match from the outset,” said head coach Christian Michner. “Wisconsin-Milwaukee is always at the top of their league and has a tendency of winning games, so we knew we were in for a tough one. They put it on us, you have to give them credit. They played very well and my kids just weren't on that level today. We started to put it together towards the end after going four goals back and I'm proud of that, but we have to do the simple, fundamental things better.”
The Cougars (2-1-0) bent but didn't break for the first 35 minutes, but Milwaukee netted two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half, followed by another pair in the first 10 minutes of the second, to quickly change the tide of the match.
In the 61st minute, sophomore Sarah Blakely scored the first goal of her career from long range, driving a ball over the head of the keeper and under the bar to get CofC on the board.
The Panthers got a pair out of Kelly Lewers and Sydney Senn and Kelly Manski both scored their first collegiate goals to stretch the four-goal lead.
CofC pushed an attack forward in the final minute of the game which resulted in a penalty kick, and freshman Hanah Huizenga converted for the second goal of her young career.
Another tough task lies ahead of CofC as they'll shift their focus to No. 22 Boston University which was edged in overtime by tournament host No. 12 South Carolina on Friday night. The Cougars and Terriers are set to kick at 12 p.m.
