FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team battled chilly, high-altitude conditions to outlast Omaha, 1-0, at Lagoon Field on the campus of Colorado State on Friday evening.
Charleston (3-4-0) snaps a four-game losing skid on the heels of freshman Rio Speller-Drews' first career goal assisted by Sarah Cardamone in the 49th minute.
Speller-Drews, a defender, played the full 90 minutes, as did fellow defenders Allison Sender, Hope Walker and Claire Newman, playing in front of goalkeeper Lauren Killian who made four saves in the shutout.
Speller-Drews and Cardamone both attempted two shot attempts, as did freshmen Mary Kate Bowers and Tracey Webster, to account for CofC's eight in the match. Over half of the attempts were on frame.
"It was a great win for us today,” said head coach Christian Michner. “Omaha played hard and was very physical, and that was a factor. The grass is pretty long out here so the game wasn't pretty to watch, but we were very effective in the second half getting in behind them and creating chances.
“It was a total team effort and a much deserved win. Rio scored a beautiful goal that beat the keeper back post and frankly we were unlucky not to score a few more. Very proud of the girls today!"
After departing the 90-degree temperatures in the Lowcountry, the Cougars had to make a quick adjustment to manage temperatures in the low 40s at kickoff in the thin Rocky Mountain air.
The Cougars will look to roll the momentum into a Sunday afternoon clash with Colorado State. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (EST).
